Promoting Research in Physio Students - The Scientifica Story

Scientifica has been known to all the Physiotherapy students of Maharashtra as their own research conference. Started in 2008 by the faculties of Sancheti College of Physiotherapy Pune, with the sole objective of promoting and encouraging research liking in the young, budding and talented Physiotherapy students, this year makes it more special as Scientifica enters in its 10th year. With its statement of “Think Scientific, Think Research”, the first Scientifica was conducted in association with the rehab dept of BJ Medical college of Sassoon General Hospital in its Pathology lecture hall. Under the blessings and guidance of Padmavibhushan Dr. KH Sancheti, Dr. Parag Sancheti and Dr. Shaila Sabnis, the 2008 Scientifica had an overwhelming participation of around 150 students from Pune and nearby regions. The mission of Scientifica was not just to provide a platform for research presentations for UG and PG Physiotherapy students, but also to make research as a fun and entertainment zone. And thus, there was an introduction of research based competitions like critical analysis of research articles and research quiz for the PGs and research antakshari and dumb-charades for the UGs. For the 1st time, students witnessed and experienced the joy of learning and understanding the essence and fundamentals of research. Thus began Scientifica with the team of Rohit Sontakke, Apurv Shimpi, Shweta Gore, Shweta Basu Roy, Pramod Shenoy, Anagha Khambete, Gajanan Bhalerao, Rajani Pagare and Aparna Murthy.

The 2nd Scientifica conducted at the same venue in 2009 witnessed participation of almost 250 participants from all over Maharashtra PT colleges. The response was overwhelming to the extent that the scientific committee had to conduct reviews and eliminations of many papers due to the limitations of the time duration. Over the coming years, Scientifica became a trend in Physio students as their own Physiotherapy research conference.

In 2013, understanding the potential of Scientifica of promoting research amongst Physiotherapy students, Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, the state health sciences university of Maharashtra state collaborated and partnered with Scientifica 2013. This year saw a radical change wherein all the Physiotherapy colleges of Pune region under MUHS, viz. DES Brijlal Jindal College of Physiotherapy, Smt. Kashibai Navale College of Physiotherapy, MA Rangoonwala College of Physiotherapy, MIMER College of Physiotherapy, and CMF College of Physiotherapy came together with Sancheti College of Physiotherapy to organise Scientifica collectively in a new venue of Hotel Le Meridian, Pune. Under the guidance of the then Hon. Vice Chancellor of MUHS Dr. Arun Jamkar and a strong and able team of Dr. Savita Rairikar, Dr. Ashokkumar Patil, Dr. Aparna Sadhale, Dr. Snehal Ghodey, Dr. Shilpa Parab and Dr. Ronika Agarwal along with all the academic faculties from these institutes, Scientifica reached new heights altogether. Registrations had to be stopped due to the incapability of the venue to accommodate more than 650 participants, who arrived from all corners of Maharashtra state from MUHS as well as deemed universities. Scientifica 2014 and Scientifica 2015 witnessed a massive overflow of registrations from neighbouring states of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Goa as well. The research competition experienced more than 200 papers presented and more research games added including research protocol making, abstract writing, research quiz, research taboo, and research dumb-charades.

In 2016, Scientifica took a break as Sancheti College of Physiotherapy introduced stage II of Physio students’ event, The Physio Inspira 2016, Physiotherapy students’ talent mega event. The objective was to make an all-rounder Physiotherapist good in research knowledge as well as talent and extra academic development, celebrating an event not only of research and education, but also of abilities and enhancements, making tomorrows’ Physios smarter, intelligent and better leaders.

2017 shall witness a National level event with amalgamation of Scientifica and Physio Inspira marking a 3 day grand event filled with fun, happiness, entertainment and learning.
